FPL=R.I.P. US 1

500 Block, South Dixie Highway, Coral Gables

500 Block, South Dixie Highway, Coral Gables, Fl

For some reason, which I guess must be purely financial, our local power company, FPL, has decided that they need to construct 105 foot high transmissions towers up South Dixie Highway through Pinecrest, South Miami, Coral Gables, and the City of Miami to provide power for other parts of our state… After somehow “hiding” the fact the  final state decision will be made by the Florida Cabinet next Tuesday, May 13th… The construction of these monstrous transmission towers  will destroy South Dixie Highway as we know it, will usurp municipal zoning control, lower property  values which will decrease the tax base, and perhaps be a medical hazard to all of those living and working along South Dixie Highway.

Now how does FPL plan to generate the addition power?… You guessed it… by building additional nuclear power plants at Turkey Point… This is a dangerous idea because 1) there is no long term solution for nuclear waste disposal, 2) the Turkey Point site is prone to a sea level rise which could turn the site into an island, 3) the possibility of hurricanes, and 4) the potential for damage from a tsunami caused by an earthquake in the Caribbean Basin (the Keys have been shaken two times this year)…

What can you do? Contact by phone the members of the Florida Cabinet and say “No” to above ground power transmission lines and “No” to nuclear power plants at Turkey Point…The Florida Cabinet consists of : Rick Scott, Governor 850-488-7146, Pam Bondi, Attorney General 866-966-7226, Jeff Atwater, Chief Financial Officer 877-693-5236, Adam Putnam, Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services 800-435-7352, and Carlos Lopez-Cantera, Lieutenant Governor 850-488-7146.

What is your opinion?
